But Julie was 18 now. She knew better. She knew the real reasons, the ones the League couldn’t mention because the general public and the legal system would lose it. The Winner’s Room.
The leftover practice tucked deep into contracts and gone unspoken since the 1910s, that had slowly trickled down in Junior Leagues and Colleges for those above age, to prepare players for the league.
Julie hadn’t done it yet. But she knew why the NHL really wanted her.
In the sea of men, they wanted a girl. Enough men had complained about the practice, not to get rid of it, but to steal a Women’s Hockey Prospect for themselves, so she could be used every time her team lost.
All she had to do to avoid it was: not lose. Get paid, don’t lose, and hopefully pick up a few cups along the way.Series
